Whether you’re at school or university homework is something
you need do to prepare for graduation and work placement.
Homework is something you choose to try to do straight away
so that you can have ample time to do it. The more time you spend on it, the
better job you will do.
To do your homework successfully you choose to pay attention
to the subject; read the questions carefully and be thorough. Then
double check everything before submitting it to your teacher. It is also wise to
do revision of the work a few weeks later to help with your retention. And try
to stay ahead of the game by following industry trends in your field.
You may have an office or study you can work in. It’s a good
idea to commit to scheduled blocks of time at your desk. (Or out in the field).
So, you put your homework on your desk and set yourself down in front of it. Keep
a to-do list, diary and calendar to plan and commence your work.
Sometimes going to the café or the library to do your
homework helps to keep the juices flowing. Employing a study buddy to work with
can help, especially if you can help and motivate one another. You may even
want to add more people to the group. You got this!
If you happen to fail something, do it again until you get
it right. Make sure you learn from your mistakes and never throw the towel in.
Try to maintain a growth mindset, meaning through effort you can improve your
smarts, grades, and self-confidence. If you do decide to withdraw defer your course in case you change your mind again. Or if you are overwhelmed drop to part time. It will appear it will take longer but at least you will have a work life balance
Doing homework is probably not something that you are going
to feel like doing. You might have to make yourself do it. You need grit. Grit
is the ability to practice delayed gratification and work towards long term
goals. Keep the goal in mind; the qualifications
and the benefits of employment such as money, status and contribution.
Try to get your homework done and out of the way each week
to free up time for hobbies and recreation. If you are working as well as studying
you will have to strike a balance, including some free time.
If you are overwhelmed with homework, try to break it down
into small chunks. Do it a bit at a time, a little goes a long way. Consider
using the Pareto principle or 80/20 rule. Where 80% of the outcomes come from
20% of the input. For example, you need to do the dishes and that’s 80% of your
kitchen cleaned. There’s another theory that is helpful and that is embarking
on your most important task first thing in the morning, setting you up for a
productive day. And another: if something takes less than 2 minutes then do it
straight away.
Now, make sure you attend all your classes, it’s incredible
how much you can miss in just one lesson. Half the work is in Showing up!
Get enough sleep. If you’re tired all the time, you won’t be
able to do a good job of your homework. And if you’re tired or depressed or
something or you have ADDH or avolition, you may need to run this by your GP.
Who may refer you onto a psychologist or psychiatrist.
Hopefully you can cultivate an interest in your subject and
learn to enjoy the work. If you stick to your guns doing the task will be a reward
in itself.
